Shelly received her B.S. in Business Administration from Auburn University. With her passion in the fashion and makeup industry, she went on to study and graduated from Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry in 2005. There she apprenticed and studied under celebrity makeup artist, Victoria Duke & Emmy nominated film artist, Jay Cannistraci. Recently, she decided to get trained in lash extensions in order to meet the ever changing beauty trends.
Shelly is a licensed aesthetician, trained lash technician and certified multi-media makeup artist. Her work consists of print, bridal, special events, runway, television, and corporae headshots. She served as the lead artist for 3 years at Miami Fashion Week and has worked on shows for CNBC, TLC, & HGTV. What are eyelash extensions and how long do they last?
Eyelash extensions are a popular new service and product that lengthens and thickens your own natural eyelashes. Lash extensions are single strands of synthetic eyelashes that are curved to replicate a natural eyelash. They are applied to each individual natural eyelash one by one for a natural, beautiful and luscious look . They take approximately two hours for your first full set. On average a full set will last 2-3 weeks and can then be maintained with touch-ups. Who doesn’t want to wake up every morning with full thick lashes that cut down on getting ready time?! Once you get them you won’t want to be without them!
How often should I get touch-ups?
We recommend getting a touch-up/fill every 2 to 3 weeks. If you wait too long your eyelash extensions will fall out and you will require a full set. Your natural eyelashes fall off every 45 – 60 days due to the natural growth cycle and are naturally replaced with the growth of a new eyelash. Other factors such as exposure to steam or touching your eyes a lot may cause the extensions to fall sooner. A touch up is needed to fill in any lashes that have fallen. Fills on average take one hour.
Can you shower or swim right away? Are there products you should absolutely avoid?
Keep water away from your lashes for the first 24-48 hours after application or touch-ups. Water can weaken the adhesive before it is set and cause lashes to fall off. Oil-based products or makeup removers around the eye area are not recommended as they can also weaken the adhesive. But after that first 24 hour period you can shower, swim, or dance in the rain with those new beauties!
Can I apply mascara to Eyelash Extensions?
Yes, even though mascara is not really required since the extensions actually give the illusion of wearing mascara it can be worn. It must however only be a water-based mascara and not waterproof mascara. Use mascara sparingly towards the time when you might need a fill and this will help blend in any gaps or areas where the extensions need replaced. Use caution when removing mascara as heavy scrubbing can pull out lash extensions.
Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?
The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes.
